Maintaining Container and Component GTINs

Containers (also called prepacks or parent items) are GTINs that contain other GTINs called components (also called child items).

Container and component rules are as follows:

Specify the GTIN as a container when you add the GTIN to the catalogue.

Create and save the container GTIN before assigning components to it.

You can change a container designation only to a different container designation, not to a no designation or component designation.

A component designation is not required for a GTIN to be a component, but if the GTIN is to be sold only as part of a container it should be designated a component.

A GTIN can be designated a component at the time it is added to the catalogue or later (that is, assign it to a container later).

To change a component's quantity or unit of measure (UOM), you must remove the component from the container, then add it to the container again with the corrected information.

A component does not require the same Selection Code and/or Product as its container.

Deleting a container does not delete its components. It deletes only the container and severs the container-component relationships.

A component GTIN can be deleted without first removing the component from the container.

A Selection Code or Product above containers can be deleted without first deleting the containers.

A container can have from 0 to 100 GTIN components.

A container can contain containers, but the second level of containers cannot contain a third level of containers (that is, you can have container/containers/components).
